IQNA – A Turkish scholar described Zionism as a fascist ideology, saying the Zionists have exploited Judaism as a pretext for occupation of Palestine.

Islam Orkan, a history professor and a journalist based in Istanbul, Turkey

Islam Orkan, a history professor and a journalist based in Istanbul, Turkey, spoke in an interview with IQNA about the importance of al-Quds and the issue of Palestine.

He said what the Zionists do is exploitation of Judaism for their own goals, noting that the founders of Zionism were mostly atheists, agnostics, or deists who believed in no religion.

The Zionists exploit Judaism hypocritically in pursuit of their goal of bringing about a racial domination, he stated.

Orkan further said that the Zionists consider themselves the owners of Palestine whereas many Jews reject this claim and say the emergence of the Israeli regime has been an outcome of occupation and crimes.

Despite their acknowledgment of Israel being an occupier, they say that like every illegitimate child, the Israeli regime has a right to exist, and thus justify the Zionist regime’s presence in the region, he stated.

Orkan said the issue of Palestine is not a religious one between Muslims and Jews so that one would investigate it from the viewpoint of history of religions.

The issue of Palestine is a political one and an issue rooted in occupation and usurpation of a land, he said.

The scholar said that from the viewpoint of human justice, it can be said that the original inhabitants of Palestine have lost their right to live in that land and the occupiers have declared the land to be their own, which runs counter to human justice.

“What we are saying is not that al-Quds belongs to Muslims but we say that al-Quds belongs to Palestinians, whether they are Muslim, Jew, or Christian. It is better to say that al-Quds belongs to humans. So if the occupiers live this usurped land today, Jews will also have a right to live in al-Quds just as they did during the Ottoman rule.”

He noted that when the Hamas resistance movement talks about the holy city, it says that “the churches, synagogues and mosques of al-Quds belong to us”.

Orkan went on to say that the issue of Palestine is important for every person who has freedom-seeking and human ideas as George Habash, a Christian with Marxist inclinations was the secretary general of the Popular Front for Liberation of Palestine.

Asked about the Quran’s view of Jews, he said the Holy Book does not condemn them for their race but for their abandoning of the religion and for corruption on earth.

He said that in Verse 142 of Surah Al-Baqarah, God reminds them of His favor to them: “Children of Israel, remember My favor which I bestowed upon you and that I preferred your (prophets among you) above the worlds.”

However, Orkan noted, this preference is as long as they had not trampled on ethical principles and distorted the religion.
